Reddit: A Battleground for Reasonable Free Speech vs AI and Bots. Can users help?

As anyone who will have seen with the recent court case between Reddit and Perplexity AI¹, there is currently a significant challenge for Reddit that will hopefully be overcome in time and which will also present an opportunity for user, revenue and profit growth.

As I am sure many fellow investors and Redditors agree, Reddit is clearly one of the better parts of the Internet, thanks in many ways to its influence by thoughtful humans. What the court case may demonstrate in more detail is the ongoing challenges for Reddit in keeping this so while managing access to and use of its millions of (usually!) carefully curated subs, of which I also seem to be spawning like loved offspring.

One challenge that Reddit needs help with in my opinion is refining or complementing its automated filtering process which occasionally and inadvertently (I assume!) allows bot content while penalising human generated content². Don’t get me wrong on this, no system is perfect and what we seem to have right now is a titanic battle between good and evil some might say. Unfortunately that will lead to collateral damage with humans potentially caught in the crossfire in a battle of machines. Perhaps foretelling a future to come but that is another story for another day.

Perhaps there is a way for Reddit and its human users to improve the situation though. I say this having launched my ā€˜Reasonable Free Speech Campaign’ today and pondering what can be done to improve the situation on my favourite social platform. Thinking about what is working well right now, such as carefully curated subs helping to make Reddit more enjoyable and useful, I think we as users may be part of the solution.

In a similar way to Wikipedia with its trusted Editors, perhaps there is scope for something similar with Reddit. I might even be so bold as to give it a name now… Reddit Curators. These trusted users would go beyond sub moderation to encompass helping in the process of weeding out bots and their content, as well as reviewing what may be inadvertent removal of genuine organic users and content.

There will probably always need to be a backstop at Reddit to oversee the whole process however perhaps Reddit Curators would reduce some of the burden upon Reddit’s existing staff and help ensure the platform is more successful in the future than it already is.

As a passionate and hyper-active user of Reddit, including writing about why I invested in Reddit earlier this year³, as well as purchasing 1,000 additional shares recently, I hope this idea can help and will be considered. I would be interested in other peoples thoughts on this as well as other suggestions that may help Reddit become the mega cap success I think it can be one day.

Have fun and prosper!

  1. I must admit having tried to post this initially in the r/redditstock sub I laughed (but also felt a touch of despair once again) when Redditā€˜s automated filters blocked one of my posts yet again. u/spez please let us help you!

Reddit is much like a human partner in some ways, or in my case like my sidekick Xaffodd!
