Musings: I almost felt like a Scottish clansman of old for a moment earlier!

My pleasant start to the day earlier was rather rudely interrupted a moment ago.

While catching up on important reading (including Simply Wall St’s Market Insights email) I heard a loud bang from the front of my property. Racing to the window I could see a van had hit and damaged our new fence (it has only been in about a month!) and was proceeding to reverse.

I thought they were going to drive off for a moment. Perhaps they were, until they saw some wild looking bearded man in a stripy dressing gown running down the drive towards them at full pelt. I almost felt like a clansman of old with my kilt-like dressing gown and knackers flowing in the breeze! 😁

P.S. I am particularly bearded and wild looking at the moment as Double Bubbler was due to play a small ‘cameo’ roll in a film this autumn. The lead actor is injured however so come spring when the filming hopefully recommences I will surely look like a true Highland warrior of old!

P.P.S. In case anyone is curious, and I have said this before… I see myself as British European. A familial DNA report from 23andME confirms ancestors from the NE Scottish Highlands, England, Wales, Ireland, Scandinavia and western continental Europe. It seems my family’s ancestors got about a fair bit!

We come in pieces!

  1. Thanks for the comment Lauryn, however I haven’t approved it as I do not allow links from visitor comments given the risks. If it was something funny which I hope it was (and not an attempt to lead me to the same fate as JLR currently!) then you should post it on my Reddit sub. I let their automatic filters deal with any guff, even though I never click on external links myself.

Xaffodd says that is unwise. He is also exploring your link with a view to possibly paying a visit if it was a website hosting malware. 😉

EDIT: It turns out it probably was malicious, as the very next day I received a similar email from another Gmail email address and with a similar link. The link was a shortened URL arrangement so you couldn’t see the destination. That’s about as big a red flag as they come!

  2. In answer to the question ‘How did the fence situation get resolved?!’ from LucrativeThinking on Reddit…

Fortunately in a civilised way after an initially high adrenaline few minutes.

Initially it looked like they were driving off (even though they wouldn’t have got far for various ’Highland’ reasons) he stopped, turned off the engine and got out. With me being a little charged at the time (an understatement!) and he being a very stocky chap (with another lad in the van) I wasn’t sure if it was going to descend into conflict for a moment or two.

I admit I wasn’t really listening to him at first (I was ready for battle!) and wasn’t sure if he’d try something silly so I was considering how medieval I would need the be with them. Telling him in my fit of anger that I used to fight for a living (which I did for a while) probably didn’t help the situation. But being two to one and dressed in a dressing gown isn’t my preferred close quarter combat arrangements so I said it in the hope he wouldn’t try anything silly (as I had a busy day lined up!).

Anyway, I am pleased to say that once things calmed, I quite liked the chap. It is his first day on the job. Awkward. I hope he doesn’t get any grief from the owner of the business, however having now spoken with the owner he seems like a good sort too. In fact I will be keeping the company‘s details should I need some work done in future!

Sadly, my numerous experiences in the past with drivers promptly leaving the scene of a collision (a regular occurrence with more than once holiday makers visiting the area in motorhomes straying across the centre of the road and promptly taking my wing mirror off for example) has led me to not being the calmest soul when potential ‘chase’ situations such as this looked to be occuring. I really need to work on staying calm however very occasionally it helps to be ’ready’ I have found.

My grandad was in ‘L Detachment’ / ‘The Special Raiding Squadron’ / ‘1 SAS’ during the war and taught me from an early age to always be ‘ready’. In fact he was an advocate of punch first, ask questions later however I try to ask questions first during peace time. 😉
